DIY – DECORATION

boll

Ok, so first I would just like to say, I don’t really know what to call this diy. A ball diy? A clay diy? I just like the look of it so I’m using it as a decoration on my bookshelf. Anyway.. For this you’ll need: fimo clay. (I used three different colors, but you can use just two if you want to), something to protect your table. (I used a bit of plastic), something to cut with and an oven.

Start by rolling a bit of clay , the color of the clay will be the color of the dots. Make it about the same size as your little finger.

boll

Then you take another piece of clay and roll that on top of  the other. This color will be like a “frame” to the dots. After that you take the third piece of clay and roll that around the other two. This will be the main color of the ball.

boll

Cut away the excess clay of the ends. Then roll out the clay so that you have a piece about the size of your index finger. Then you cut the clay into smal pieces. As you can see in the image I cut away small pieces at the ends again.

Skär sedan leran i bitar.

boll

Roll each piece and then put them together and roll them again. This might be a bit tricky but just take it slow when you roll.

boll

And repeat.. End this step by rolling the clay together.

boll

Then you cut the clay in thin slices. Roll a ball the same color as the main color of your ball.

/// Sedan skär du leran i tunna skivor.

boll6

And place the slices around the ball. When that is done, carefully roll the ball so that the slices “melts” with the ball, and each other.

/// Placera skivorna runt bollen.

boll7

Harden it in the oven, following the instructions on the package. And you are done!

DIY – RIDGES AND VALLEYS

kort

Today I want to show you a really simple way to make patterned paper. And I know that there are special tools for making these kinds of patterns, but here in Sweden we have a saying that goes something like “you take what you have”, and I don’t have one of those, so I used a crochet hook ..

kort

..and my Paper Cutter with a ruler. No fancy one, I think I bought it for about 21 € /24 $. The key thing here is to make sure that the end of the crochet hook is bigger than the score on the Paper cutter, and that you use paper that are a bit thicker, carton will work just fine.

kort

Then you just place the paper over the score and use the “wrong” end of the crochet hook to make lines. Easy as that! Turn the paper to make patterns.

kort

In this picture you can see (I hope) that some of the lines are ridges and some are valleys. You can experiment with the patterns by turning the paper upside down when making the lines.

Here you can see some of the patterns I did.

DIY – MAGNETS WITH A PATTERN

magnets

This is a really simple diy, all you need is Fimo clay and magnets. Take small pieces of clay and mix them together with your hands until you’re happy with the pattern. Then you roll them into small balls, and use your fingers to press them into small “plates”. Harden them by following the instructions on the fimo clay package.

magnets

Take the magnets, I found these self adhesive ones, and place them on the back of the “plates”. If you use regular magnets just glue them on instead.

magnets

And you’re done! Just remember, that black clay have a tendency to “take over” so start with a small piece and then add later on if you want more black.

IN THE MAKING – SPOONS

Okey let me just tell you. I have been working on another diy for you and it’s been taking the whole week and I’m still not finished. It is not going well! I wanted to show you a wall hanging thingie that i’ve been seeing alot lately, but first I could NOT figure out how to tie from the instructions I was following, and I had to start over a couple of times. And feeling really stupid about it. Then I desided that “aah I do it my own way”, so I started doing it the way I remember doing “friendship bracelets”. And in the middle of the whole thing I remember I haven’t taken a single picture for the tutorial.. gah! And on top of that I really like the look of the ones that have a really thin thread, and I think I might have taken a thread that is too thin because it is going to take forever… So instead of that you get to se a couple of pictures from another diy I’m working on.

spoon

I don’t know where it comes from but I have really started to like ceramics that look homemade. A bit crocked, with fingerprints, and not at all “perfect”. So I bought some white clay, and made some spoons. I also tried some different ways to make them. The biggest spoon (on the right) I made by forming the top of the spoon with my fingers. The others I made by rolling a ball first, then I pressed my thumb in the middle of the ball to make the spoon shape. I like the look of the second way better, so the rest of the spoons I made the same way. The next step will be to treat the spoons with something ( I haven’t decided yet) so that it doesn’t matter if the spoons get wet. Stay tuned..

DIY – SPOTTED PLATE

DIY- Spotted plate

Ever since I first saw these spotted plates, I´ve wondered if it would be possible to make one myself. So I bought some porcelain paint and a pipette and here you have the result..

Some tips along the way if you want to try it too:

  • Make sure you have a big piece of protection paper under the plate when you “paint” because the color really flies everywhere.
  • I “test painted” once on the protection paper after every time I filled the pipette because I felt that it otherwise was too much color at once.
  •  Try “painting” from different directions, not only from the top, and press various hard on the pipette  to get different effects.
  • Keep in mind that porcelain paint is quite watery so if you, as I did from the beginning, “paint” too much on the edges of the plate , the color will flow down towards the bottom of the plate.

When you feel like you´re done, just follow the instructions on the porcelain paint packaging. Good luck!
